The Approximation Power of Priority Algorithms by Spyros Angelopoulos

چکیده
The Approximation Power of Priority Algorithms Spyros Angelopoulos Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Computer Science University of Toronto 2006 Greedy-like algorithms have been a popular approach in combinatorial optimization, due to their conceptual simplicity and amenability to analysis. Surprisingly, it was only recently that a formal framework for their study emerged. In particular, Borodin, Nielsen and Rackoff introduced the class of priority algorithms as a model for abstracting the main properties of (deterministic) greedy-like algorithms; they also showed limitations on the approximation power of such algorithms for various scheduling problems. In this thesis we extend and modify the priority-algorithm framework so as to make it applicable to a wider class of optimization problems and settings. More precisely, we first derive strong lower bounds on the approximation ratio of priority algorithms for two wellstudied problems, namely facility location and set cover. These are problems for which several greedy-like algorithms with good performance guarantees exist. Subsequently, we address the issue of randomization in priority algorithms, and show how to prove bounds on the power of greedy-like algorithms with access to random bits. Finally, we propose a model for priority algorithms in the context of graph theoretic optimization problems; the later class of problems turns out to be of particular interest, since it poses certain conceptual challenges when studying priority algorithms. Our goal is to define a model in which it is possible to filter out certain overly powerful algorithms, while still capturing a very rich class of greedy-like algorithms.

On the Power of Priority Algorithms for Facility Location and Set Cover
We apply and extend the priority algorithm framework introduced by Borodin, Nielsen and Rackoo to deene \greedy-like" algorithms for (uncapacitated) facility location problems and set cover. These problems have been the focus of extensive research from the point of view of approximation algorithms, and for both problems, greedy algorithms have been proposed and analyzed. The priority algorithm ...

Borodin, Nielsen and Rackoff [13] introduced the class of priority algorithms as a framework for modeling deterministic greedy-like algorithms. In this paper we address the effect of randomization in greedy-like algorithms. More specifically, we consider approximation ratios within the context of randomized priority algorithms. As case studies, we prove inapproximation results for two well-stud...
متن کاملParameterized Analysis of Online Steiner Tree Problems
Steiner tree problems occupy a central place in both areas of approximation and on-line algorithms. Many variants have been studied from the point of view of competitive analysis, and for several of these variants tight bounds are known. However, in several cases, worst-case analysis is overly pessimistic, and fails to explain the relative performance of algorithms. We show how parameterized an...
متن کاملOnline Priority Steiner Tree Problems
A central issue in the design of modern communication networks is the provision of Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees at the presence of heterogeneous users. For instance, in QoS multicasting, a source needs to efficiently transmit a message to a set of receivers, each requiring support at a different QoS level (e.g., bandwidth). This can be formulated as the Priority Steiner tree problem: Her...
متن کاملOn-Line Algorithms for Market Equilibria
We consider a variation of the classical problem of finding prices which guarantee equilibrium in linear markets consisting of divisible goods and agents with money. Specifically, we consider on-line algorithms for this problem in which goods are considered on-line, and each good is assigned an irrevocable price. Since exact equilibria will not be found in such a setting, we appeal to the conce...
